Arrow Rock Lecture Highlights Missouri’s ‘Alexander The Great’
Sat, FEB 03, 2018, 10:00am

The Friends of Arrow Rock’s First Saturday Lecture Series kicks off its 2018 lineup with “Missouri’s Alexander the Great: Alexander William Doniphan,” at 10 a.m. this Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Arrow Rock State Historic Site Visitors’ Center.

Dr. Larry Brown, a retired assistant professor of Human Geography at the University of Missouri and co-president of the Mid-Missouri Organization for Storytelling, is the presenter. He’ll share the riveting life story of Doniphan, who during the 1838 Mormon War, refused an order to execute Mormon founder Joseph Smith and his followers. Doniphan was hailed as a hero of the Mexican War when he led his troops on one of the longest and most successful marches in American military history. He became a prosperous businessman, helped establish William Jewell College in Liberty, and refused to take sides in the Civil War.

This fascinating, one-hour presentation is free and open to the public. Come early to enjoy complimentary refreshments.

Upcoming First Saturday presentations include: "The Fenwicks of Arrow Rock, 1835-present: My ancestry, racial identity, and patriotism,” by Dr. Michael Kateman, on March 3;  “Native American Art,” by Joe Don Brave, on April 7; “The Social History of Knitting,” by Nancy Blossom, on May 5.
The Friends of Arrow Rock’s 2018 First Saturday Lecture Series is funded through a special gift from Pamela Parsons, former Friends of Arrow Rock education director.

Following the lecture, the Experience Arrow Rock tourism committee will host a chili and soup luncheon at Arrow Rock’s Old Schoolhouse at the corner of Eighth and Main Streets. The luncheon is a fundraiser for the group, which produces the town’s annual brochure and puts on many of Arrow Rock’s most popular events, including the Heritage Festival. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Attendees get their choice from among a variety of chilis and soups, plus a hot roll and drink for $7.50, and can add on a homemade dessert for an additional $2.50.
