Surrender at Appomattox
General Grant & General Lee

On Thursday evening, October 18, 2018 at 6:30 pm in Robertson Hall at the Bates County
Museum, General Ulysses S. Grant and General Robert E. Lee will be portrayed by veteran
re-enactors Randal Durbin and Lane Smith. Two legendary heroes from America’s past will
come to life and share personal observations experienced as they found themselves on the
cusp of making national, even international, history.

Imagine the setting. Appomattox Courthouse, April 1865. Two men, each representing
untold thousands of people, come face to face with dignity and determination to bring to
an end the long and bloody War Between the States.

*Hank Roberts, Bates County Purveyor of Folk & Civil War music, will sing three Civil War
ballads to open the program. Hank is Pastor of Amsterdam United Methodist Church and is
also President of the Bates County Historical Society.
