“The Way of American Genius”
To Hannibal and Back Again
St. Joseph Museum’s Next Trip Explores the Sites along Highway 36

Ready to get inspired? Then it’s time to join the St. Joseph Museum as they explore Highway 36 all the way to Hannibal, Missouri, and back. There will be something for everyone who travels along this route where so many prominent folks have lived that it’s often referred to as “The Way of American Genius.” Mark Twain, Walk Disney, the guy who invented sliced bread, Gen. John J. Pershing – they all have ties to this four-lane road in northern Missouri. So it’s off to re-discover American’s great ideas as the trip begins at the St. Joseph Museum, 3406 Frederick Ave., on Thursday, March 21. The motorcoach will return to the museum on March 23, 2019.

The three-day adventure includes a stop in Hamilton, home of the Missouri Star Quilt Company and J.C. Penney. Trip participants can choose to explore the shops or visit the J.C. Penney Museum. For lunch, it’s off to Macon and Ashley’s Apple Basket Café for a home-style meal before touring an Ethanol Biorefinery, which exists to advance development, production, and use of ethanol as a beneficial renewable fuel. Then it’s on to Hannibal to settle into the hotel, tour the downtown area, and have dinner.

The second day of the trip will kick off with a tour of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum. From there, it’s off for lunch at the Mark Twain Dinette. A visit to the beautiful Rockcliffe Mansion is next on the itinerary followed by a tour of Mark Twain Cave! Weather permitting; trip participants will board the Mark Twain Riverboat for a dinner cruise and a chance to take in the sights along the Mississippi.

On the return trip, the tour will include a stop in Marceline, Missouri, to visit the boyhood home of Walt Disney and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, the group will visit Gen. Pershing’s boyhood home followed by a stop in Chillicothe, the Home of Sliced Bread. Trip goers will enjoy a driving tour of the unique tapestry of murals, depicting the story of a bygone era, in downtown Chillicothe. The day’s activities will feature a stop at the Grand River Historical Society Museum before the group ventures on to a chuck wagon dinner at Country Cabins. At the Cabins guests can shop and visit the bakery too!

The motor coach will leave from the St. Joseph Museum, 3406 Frederick Ave., at 8:00 a.m. on March 21 and return to the museum at approximately 8 p.m. The cost of the trip will be $460 for museum members and $480 for non-members. The fee includes luxury motor coach transportation, all admission fees, two-nights of double occupancy accommodations, step-on guide service, seven meals, snacks, and tips. Single occupancy hotel accommodations are available for an additional $100. Space is limited and paid reservations must be made by February 22.
