Saturday, May 18, 2013

As part of Historic Preservation Month in Independence, Missouri, the Civil War Round Table of Western Missouri is announcing their next bus tour:

  • Destination:  Bates County, Missouri
  • Date:  Saturday, May 18, 2013
  • Time:  9 am to 5 pm
  • Cost:  $30 (includes a box lunch with a ham or turkey sandwich, pasta salad, cookie, and iced tea or water)
  • Reservation deadline:  Wednesday, May 15, 2013

We will meet at the Blue & Grey Book Shoppe at 106 E. Walnut, Independence, Missouri.  Street parking and a lot at Walnut and Liberty are available.  Our transportation will be a school bus so you may want to bring an extra pillow.

We have a special treat at the Bates County Museum at Butler, Missouri to hear Dr. Joan Stack from the State Historical Society of Missouri speaking about one of her special areas of expertise, George Caleb Bingham, and other Civil War imagery and illustration.  The Bates County Museum has an image of "Order No. 11" that Dr. Stack will discuss.

After the program and lunch, we will travel to the new Missouri State Historical Site at Island Mound which was the first instance of black troops fighting in the Civil War.

Please mail your reservation check for $30 to "CWRTWM, P. O. Box 3019, Independence, MO 64055" by Wednesday, May 15, and specify ham or turkey sandwich.

Questions may be directed to Beverly Shaw, Treasurer, at 816 225-7944 (cell).
